What My Great-Grandmother Returned To Me From Beyond The Grave
A couple of months ago, we spoke to Codie about obeah, communicating with the dead and other supernatural occurrences she experienced in Jamaica. In addition to a dead man telling her that her neighbor was trying to curse their family, she also shared a story about her great grandmother giving her something from beyond the grave.
My great grandma died when I was probably nine years old. Out of the first batch of grandkids, I’m the last one. There are like ten of us. So I was always running around, trying to keep up with everybody. When my great grandma passed, my older cousins were like, ‘Hey, let’s go and write our names on a piece of paper and put it in Ena’s casket. And I was like, ‘Ok, sure.’ Knowing inside, I was like shitting bricks.
I was scared and worried, thinking ‘Your name’s going to be in a casket with a dead person’s body.’ Inside my mind Im like ‘I’m not going to do that.’ But anyway, I went ahead with it and put my name in there.
After the funeral, I’m telling you Veronica, it was like racking my brain. I woke up with sweats. I freaked out and the next day I told my mom what I did. And she was like, ‘Why are you freaking out? Did you think that something bad is going to happen? It’s Ena. She’s not going to do anything to you. She loved you like crazy. You’re good.’
That made me feel better a little bit.
What happens sometimes after someone dies, they visit you. What you do is you leave rice out on a plate. So we left the rice out I wanted to make sure the rice was good. And she came to see me.
She said, ‘Why are you so nervous? Why are you scared? It’s perfectly fine.’ And she gave me the paper back.
NSNC: Whaaaaat?!… In the dream?
No! In real life.
I kid you not! She gave me the paper back.
NSNC: Oh my God!
And if I were the person then that I am now, I would have kept it. But as a kid, you don’t know shit. I was just like, ‘Man, I dodged that bullet. Okay cool.’
And now that I think about it, I was so inundated with [supernatural experiences], her giving that back to me didn’t affect me none. I didn’t think anything of it.
